New to Blu: August 25-31

Last century’s action heroes abound on Blu-ray this week, with iconic franchises and back-catalogue classics out-numbering new theatrical releases.

Western fans particularly will be pleased to be able to buy two of the ‘60s biggest box office draws: The Magnificent Seven (and its sequels) and The Man With No Name trilogy.

The Magnificent Seven can be bought separately and as part of a collection with Return of the Seven, Guns of the Magnificent Seven and The Magnificent Seven Ride; A Fistful of Dollars, For a Few Dollars More and The Good, the Bad and the Ugly are being sold separately but soon will be rounded up in a box set.

Also new from Wednesday is a repackaged, repriced Die Hard Quadrilogy that includes a video game disc, along with a lesser Bruce Willis thriller, Striking Distance, one of Arnold Schwarzenegger’s least successful action movies, The Last Action Hero, the original Bad Boys and High Crimes.

More deserving of classic status are Raging Bull, Patton, The French Connection I and II (on a two-disc release), Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and The Jewel of the Nile (which also can be bought with Romancing the Stone).

New from the multiplex are From Paris With Love, The Book of Eli and Dear John while coming direct to disc is Extract, the Mike Judge (King of the Hill) comedy starring Jason Bateman and Ben Affleck.
