New to Blu: August 28-September 3

Kiwis get the jump on the rest of the world with Iron Man 3 going on sale here up to four weeks ahead of the UK and US.

It includes a behind-the-scenes peek at Thor: The Dark World (which opens in November), Deconstructing the Scene: Attack on Air Force One, cast and crew interviews, a gag reel, deleted/extended scenes, and an audio commentary with screenwriters Drew Pearce and Shane Black, who also directed.

The Blu-ray doesn’t release in the UK until September 9 while the US has to wait until September 24.

But season three of Boardwalk Empire lands here a week after its US launch.

Boardwalk Empire: The Complete Third Season doesn’t falter or fail.

“Its 1080p/AVC-encoded video presentation is so exacting and proficient that it’s hard to imagine a scenario where it could look much better than it does here.

“Sharpshooting videophiles will notice a bit of crush here and there, as well as an occasional unevenness to the series’ ever-mild graininess.

“But none of it should be cause for alarm.”

Boardwalk Empire: The Complete Third Season looks more or less perfect in hi-def.

“HBO has been rock-solid in the technical department for years, and while Game of Thrones is still probably their best A/V showcase (for reasons more artistic than technical), this show is a valiant runner-up.”

“The supplemental material of Boardwalk Empire is fairly in line compared to prior seasons, which is a good thing because these things are loaded.”

Also new are Star Trek Enterprise – Season 2, Monty Python’s The Meaning of Life, Scorpions – Moment of Glory, A Glimpse Inside The Mind Of Charlie Swann III (“aside from banding, the rest of the video is fairly strong”), and Passion (“image depth and clarity are consistently outstanding, while contrast levels are stable”).

Missing out on Blu-ray releases are Top of the Lake, which is a double-blow as the Jane Campion drama’s only aired here in SD, and First Crossings, which TV One screened in HD.

Top of the Lake is out on Blu-ray in the UK. I will wait for price to drop a bit more, then buy this series.

  2. Good idea. Although, ironically, you can still import it for less from on Blu-ray than what it costs to buy here on DVD ($40).

  3. It’s not very often we get Blu-rays released here first so I’m looking forward to Iron Man 3 … it’s a darn good movie and there is a funny bit after the credits have finished, don’t miss it 🙂

  4. When and where was Top of the Lake locally screened? I’ve seen the first two episodes and it’s compelling viewing.

  5. First three eps absolutely riveting but the last three lose momentum and credibility — just as Sky did when it aired the series a couple of months ago on UK TV. UK TV was one of the funders, which is why it had the rights. But showcasing this sublimely filmed series in low-quality SD was a travesty and it’s shameful of Sky that it still hasn’t seen fit to convert UK TV to HD when so much of its content is now HD native and older SD shows, like Dad’s Army, George & Mildred and Open All Hours, have been siphoned off to Jones!
