New to Blu: August 3 – 9

“Hardcore Henry locks and loads its way onto Blu-ray with a 1080P MPEG-4 encode that feels a bit crippled by the way they chose to film it.

“Framed at a 1.85:1 aspect ratio, this movie was filmed entirely on GoPro cameras with special rigs to keep the camera firmly on the stuntmen’s heads. But there are certain drawbacks to filming with unorthodox cameras.”

“Universal’s Blu-ray transfer reflects the movie’s inherent limitations, yielding an image that’s nowhere near as crisp or visually articulate as most other movies. Details are adequately sharp but finer textures almost always get lost.”

Winter comes early, with The Hunstman: Winter’s War going on sale here 2-3 weeks ahead of the US and UK, along with season four of Orphan Black (and a S1-4 box set), Wallace & Gromit: The Collection (“all look terrific, with good colour, contrast and detail”) and the R13-rated Batman: The Killing Joke (“I feel a little sad I made a Batman film little kids can’t see”).

  1. I bought the Wallace & Gromit Blu-ray collection from the UK. Amazing how long it has taken to release this Blu-ray into New Zealand. Mind you, a number of Blu-rays released into Australia or other countries haven’t been released into New Zealand: Jaws 2, Jaws 3D and Jaws 4 Blu-rays were released in June this in Australia and in the US and UK but haven’t been released in New Zealand.
