New to Blu: August 31-September 6

The Blu-ray of Fast & Furious 5 gets a head start in this part of the world by going on sale tomorrow whereas it’s not released until next week in the UK and next month in the US.

According to one early review, the picture scores a 5/5 for “an excellent video transfer of clear reference quality” and 4/5 for “impressive albeit far from perfect audio quality”.

F&F5 is being released in three editions: single disc, triple-play and in a collection with the F&F1-4.

The week’s only other non-back catalogue newcomer is the real-life spy drama, Fair Game.

Other than some “nitpicky annoyances … this is a fantastic looking transfer for a straightforward, low-key dramatic film” that’s “limited, it seems, only by the quality of the HD video source”.

Meanwhile, Scarface bows on Blu-ray with “a guns-blazing 1080p/VC-1 transfer, but walks away riddled with too many holes for my (complete) satisfaction” yet is “undoubtedly THE BEST the film has ever looked on home video”.

Also making comebacks on Blu-ray for the first time are Billy Elliot, The Ladykillers, Candyman, Blues Brothers, Born on the Fourth of July and Curse of the Golden Flower while being reissued is the Rambo Trilogy.
