New to Blu: December 28 – January 10

Western re-make The Magnificent Seven already has shot to the top of the sales charts in the US.

It was #1 on both the combined DVD/Blu-ray chart and the dedicated Blu-ray chart amid reviews that can only be dubbed magnificent.

Here it’s been released on Blu-ray as well as 4K/UHD (which JB Hi-Fi has on special for an impressively low $31.20).

“The image is handsomely organic,” says of the former. “Grain distribution is even and light but obvious in its benefits and attractiveness. Detailing is fantastic.”

“There’s a sharpness to the transfer, but it never feels overdone where it takes away from the film,” DVD Authority says. “Instead, it works in its favour. The image is AVC encoded with a 2.39:1 ratio.”

High-Def Digest describes the 4K presentation as “incredible. Every nuanced detail and every rich colour is perfect in 2160p.

“This 4K UHD upgrade is why we love the new format. Since most of the film was shot with practical effects and not CGI, the detail is very lifelike with every tiny detail showing up.”

“Audio on the 4K UHD disc has also been upgraded to Dolby Atmos (with a TrueHD 7.1 core) from DTS-HD MA 7.1 on the 1080p Blu-ray,” Home Theater Forum points out.

“This is a much more immersive track, even when played back on non-Atmos equipment with speakers in a 5.1 configuration with additional front heights and Pro-Logic IIz enabled.”

Also new this week are Mythica – The DarksporeRed Billabong and Kill Command (“the video is very good, audio loud and enveloping”).

  1. Worse the film, better the disc still holds sway as we move into the age of 4k.

  2. February 6 for 24, no word yet on others.
