New to Blu: February 1 – 7

The week’s only noteworthy release, Snowden, boasts a “stellar” 1080p/AVC MPEG-4 encode with a 2.40:1 aspect ratio, High-Def Digest reports.

“Shot mostly with Arri Alexa cameras, it certainly has the sheen of a digital shoot (but not in the painfully awkward style of Michael Mann’s last few films).

“I prefer the traditional look of celluloid, but the digital appearance of the film is actually fitting for the digital warfare that Snowden portrays.”

Blu-ray.com noted the transfer was “virtually devoid of source flaws or imperfections” while Home Theater Forum said, “Sharpness is outstanding and colour rich and full with realistic skin tones.”

DVD Talk thought the DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 lossless track is “a fairly modest affair, but it doesn’t hesitate to bring the goods when called upon. There aren’t any moments of action that resonate in the low-end but it’s definitely present.”

The week’s only other release is the direct-to-disc Carnage Park.

Said High-Def Digest: “Even though this film incorporates a sharp degree of colour grading into the yellows and browns reminiscent of 70’s grindhouse horror, the film an an amazingly clear and detailed image.”
