New to Blu: February 18-24

It’s virtually game over for any other release this week if it’s not called Game of Thrones.

“Like the Blu-ray releases of previous seasons, The Complete Fourth Season features another precise and proficient 1080p/AVC-encoded video presentation.

“The rich, sun-drenched hues of King’s Landing and the bleak, icy despair of The Wall and the snowy lands of the Free Folk fare beautifully despite their differences, with perfectly saturated skintones, vibrant southern vistas, frigid northern snowscapes, dank castle interiors, visceral primaries and sinister blacks.”

Something differentiates this season from the others, though, with some additional fire lit underneath its visual quality due to the emergence of two, state-of-the-art 6K RED digital cameras on-set, named Dragons, also made of carbon fiber for more versatile movement.

“The results? Believe it or not, Game of Thrones does indeed impress even more through its slate of 1.78:1-framed, 1080p AVC treatments, mostly in complex terrains and close-quartered settings.”

Extras include 11 audio commentaries, interactive episode guides, a season three retrospective, a comprehensive deconstruction of the fourth season’s ninth episode, and a lively half-hour roundtable discussion.

“With all its bleak darkness and encompassing shadows, A Walk Among the Tombstones’ provides a diverse and strong 1080p visual presentation.

“Black levels are excellent. Even though inky shadows dominate the visuals, there is clear delineation from shadow and fine detail.”

“With no digital defects, and no real complaints, this is easily a demo presentation, and just shy of reference material.”

“There may not be much action, fist fights or shootouts in A Walk Among the Tombstones, but that doesn’t mean [the] DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 surround track is uninvolving or unengaging.

“LFE output is assertive and nuanced, lending atmospheric weight to suspenseful scenes and the necessary oomph gunshots and other low-end elements require.”

Also new are Smiley (“serviceable, with decent detail and texture”) and Two Night Stand.
