New to Blu: February 9-15
The pick of this week’s new Blu-ray titles could be the sole TV release: series one and two of Being Human.
A conspiratorial, supernatural twist on This Life, about a werewolf, vampire and ghost who go flatting in Bristol, it has ended its SD run on Prime just as a third series has gone to air in HD on the BBC.
Both series are out simultaneously, with each set including extended and deleted scenes, behind-the-scenes footage and interviews.
DVD Verdict thought the 1080i transfer was “soft” but “true to life and appropriately sharp, colourful and bright, without appearing over-processed”.
Blu-rayDefinition.com agreed, calling it “solid” but noting “the low-budget quality of the series doesn’t always look the greatest” while Blu-ray.com said it was “steady but somewhat underwhelming”.
Most of the week’s other new releases also received grudging praise for their transfers, including Eat Pray Love, City Island, Going the Distance, Lymelife and the week’s only back-catalogue release, The Crow.
But critics thought Dinner for Schmucks looked “warm and inviting” (High-Def Digest) and “great for a comedy” (Home Theater Forum).
Also new this week are Eureka Seven Movie: Good Night, Sleep Tight, Young Lovers and Cliff Richard: Bold as Brass – Live in London 2010.
