New to Blu: January 28-February 3

Two series that were broadcast here in SD and a reboot of a 30-year-old TV hit dominate this week’s Blu-ray slate.

Peaky Blinders, which airs on UKTV, is the BBC’s answer to Boardwalk Empire, a violent gangster drama set in 1919 Birmingham.

“Without wanting to give anything else away, this is simply a gorgeous series that has to be seen,” What Hi-Fi said.

“It’s the Beeb at its best and looks great on Blu-ray.”

A sci-fi series starring Halle Berry that screened on Prime also is out on Blu-ray and is “jam packed full of extras”.

Extant: Season 1 comes with a great 1080p HD transfer presented in 1.78:1 aspect ratio.

“This TV series has a very nice look to it. It was shot digitally, so there is no real layer of grain or filmic look to the show. The result is a very pristine and clean looking series.”

“It’s a bit smooth and sterile, which in a way helps enhance the ultra-clean look that’s so prevalent throughout the show.

“The flip side is a somewhat flat façade.”

“The DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 sound mix is especially impressive for a summer television series.

“There is outstanding split sound effects woven through the mix into the fronts and rears, and the background score by Marcelo Zarvos gets a nice spread through the entire soundstage with excellent bass rumblings through music and effects.”

The Equalizer arrives on Blu-ray with a DTS-HD Master Audio 7.1 lossless soundtrack.

“It’s impressively immersive and wide, easily pulling the listener into every environment and featuring plenty of discrete and motion sound effects.”

“A big chunk of the movie takes place at night and/or in dimly lit environments, and the black levels here are outstanding.

“Detail and clarity is also wonderful throughout, including the actors themselves, as every crease and wrinkle can be made out on the performers’ faces.”

Missing from the local release however is a mini picture-in-picture extra.

“Viewers can choose to watch The Equalizer in this expanded presentation, which provides scene-specific, behind-the-action video and commentary.

“This mostly concerns the bloody action and stunts, and adds about 23 minutes to the movie’s running time.”
