New to Blu: July 15 – 21
Other than a 4K-UHD edition of Life, this week’s Blu-ray releases have bypassed cinemas for home theatre.
“Aftermath was shot digitally,” High-Def Digest reports. “The image takes on a rather sombre palette, with little use of brighter colours and an overall grayish tone to the presentation …
“Details are pretty strong throughout, and facial features are well-defined.”
“Aftermath‘s DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 mix is perfectly workmanlike and competent, but it really doesn’t have much opportunity to knock sonic socks off,” Blu-ray.com said.
“Overall, it’s not always a very pretty picture – nor necessarily the look you would expect for this kind of piece – but it is still a faithful reflection of the director’s intended presentation of the film,” AVForums concluded.
“30 Minutes or Less is another stunner of a Sony Blu-ray release,” Blu-ray.com said.
“The 1080p transfer is more or less flawless. The image features a very well balanced, extraordinarily crisp, wonderfully clear, and gorgeously film-like texture.”
“Shot on film, not digital, the print is crisp and nicely detailed,” MichaelDVD said. “Blacks are deep, shadow detail very good, colours look nice and natural, skin tones accurate.”
“As far as the quality of the DTS-HD track goes, it’s pretty excellent overall,” DVD Talk said, “particularly during the action scenes or during the scenes where things explode.”
“The print has been manipulated,” MichaelDVD said of From a House on Willow Street.
“Some colours, including yellows, have been enhanced and most are glossy which does effect skin tones.
“Lighting varies; lights flicker and torches are used frequently by the characters however sharpness is very good, as are blacks, and shadow detail is such that we see what the filmmaker intends us to see.”
