New to Blu: July 27-August 2
This week’s Blu-ray releases are limited to one title, Limitless.
The thriller, about a struggling writer’s experiences with a mind-altering drug, comes with alternate endings and a commentary by director Neil Burger (The Illusionist).
US critics said it “translates flawlessly to high definition”, the “black levels are inky and consistent, and detail quality is superb, lending both foreground textures and backgrounds lovely presence and distinction”, and the robust audio boasts “a wealth of sonic detail”.
But High-Def Digest was less effusive, dubbing it “a strong but not always pleasing video presentation, that respectfully serves the filmmaker’s deliberate and sometimes creative cinematic manipulations”.
Making up for this week’s HD paucity will be next week’s slate of 15 new Blu-ray releases, ranging from Hop and The Way Back to a slew of back-catalogue classics, including Apocalypse Now Redux, American Graffiti and Once Upon a Time in the West.
