New to Blu: July 3-9

Unlike the 2D Blu-ray, Jurassic Park 3D has been cut from a new 4K restoration, complete with re-mixed 7.1 audio.

“Purists will shrug off this 3D presentation because detail is lost in the MVC/MPEG-4 transfer, but the effect is nonetheless impressive.

“Despite the loss of grain, a lot of people are going to like this version.”

“While I wouldn’t suggest this an improvement over the previous Blu-ray release, the extra dimension does add another layer to the story’s sense of adventure and provides a substantially immersive effect to its enjoyment.”

“The 2013 transfer suffers a loss in detail … however, what it gains will certainly appeal to many a cinephile.

“Specifically, it’s been granted a notably warmer, more fittingly temperate colour palette, as well as more lifelike flesh tones, richer blacks and more cinematic contrast leveling, which leads to darker, more evocative and more suspenseful sequences.”

“This is a new revision of the 7.1 mix created for the 2011 Blu-ray. As before, the mix is an absolute pleasure to hear, but it’s LOUD.”

Also out in 3D is Rise of the Guardians, “with a stunning, reference-level 1080p/MVC MPEG-4 encode that’s vibrant and brilliant.

“All manner of objects and delightfully colourful things come charging at the audience and appear to float in the middle of the living room.”

As for the 2D version, “Rise of the Guardians is as flawless as you could expect on Blu-ray, with the only minor quibble being some very minor banding.”

“Amour was shot digitally on the Arri Alexa, which captures at 2.8K resolution, and had a 4K digital intermediate … you’d expect a pristine transfer and you get one.”

“This is an excellent presentation, which I am convinced will please even the most demanding amongst its fans.”

The Sweeney divided US and UK critics: the former thought it “looks and sounds fantastic” but the latter called it “hardly reference material”.

“The DTS HD 5.1 Master Audio track has a whole lot of kick, delivering some room-rattling sequences and generally opting for an aggressive approach at every turn.”

Also new are I Give It a Year, The Last Temptation of Christ and three resurrections of Jesus Christ Superstar (the original movie, the West End stage show and a version of the stage show shot for video).
