New to Blu: July 5 – 11

The LEGO Batman Movie bounds on to 4K-UHD and Blu-ray this week but fans will have to wait until July 12 for the 3D edition.

The LEGO Batman Movie makes for both a striking visual experience and a flawless Blu-ray presentation from WB in its 2.35:1-framed, 1080p treatment,” DVD Talk said.

“There’s a slightly darker atmosphere at work here than in The Lego Movie, as one would expect when dealing with Batman and his nighttime adventures, but that only serves to amplify the disc’s rendering of depth and shadows.”

Blu-ray.com said the 4K-UHD transfer imparts “greater depth and immediacy to the proceedings and … superior clarity for the multiple layers of action in LEGO Batman‘s busiest scenes.

“The added sense of depth doesn’t quite achieve the full impact of the film’s 3D presentation, but it comes remarkably close — with the added benefit of the superior Atmos soundtrack that the 3D disc omits.”

“In terms of resolution the differences between this and the 1080p version are appreciable as there is a noticeably finer texture in the minutiae especially in the characteristics/physical makeup of the characters,” AVSForum said.

It rated the 4K-UHD transfer 90/100 and the Blu-ray, 100.

Also new on 4K-UHD are Smurfs: The Lost Village and The Amazing Spider-Man.

More movies now that come with a 3D version don’t have a Dolby Atmos soundtrack. The 2D version does have a Dolby Atmos soundtrack though. Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them is another example.

  2. It may have something to do with the capacity of the discs. Region B that we are will also have all the European languages on them as well. Region A will usually only have a couple of languages. Not sure about region-free movies.
