New to Blu: June 10 – 16
The latest Hollywood big-gun to miss out on a 4K-UHD release here is Midway.
“It’s a solid-looking, action-packed film with some decent detail and a good colour palette,” High-Def Digest said of the Blu-ray, “but the 4K UHD with Dolby Vision disc is the way to go.”
Concurred AVForums of the 4K-UHD upscale: “Despite the 2K limitations, the image is rich and vibrant, with plenty of detail on show; from skin texture to clothing weaves (particularly military insignias), from cockpit layout to open vistas of Hawaii, from aircraft damage to aircraft carrier decking; there are keen edges popping with clarity.”
Guy Ritchie’s latest The Gentlemen also is Blu-ray only, despite 4K-UHD distribution elsewhere.
“Shot in 3.4K digital resolution on digital cameras and then transferred to a 4K digital intermediate, The Gentlemen looks really good on Blu-ray,” AV Nirvana said.
Hi-Def Ninja said the Blu-ray of Guns Akimbo has “a very stylised look to it. The movie has been captured digitally but while it looks clean, at times there is a grittiness to it …
“As for the colours, they have a brilliance no matter the lighting.”
Waterloo, The Duellists, Sorry, Wrong Number and the original The Host are being dusted off for Blu-ray while Wonders of the Sea is a natural history documentary with an Arnold Schwarzenegger narration.
