New to Blu: June 8-14 (TV)
Three best-of-British favourites top this week’s TV-on-BD releases – and each comes with exclusive content that hasn’t been broadcast.
Sherlock: Series 1 boasts a pilot episode in addition to the three telemovies that have just completed an SD run on TV One, along with two audio commentaries and a making-of half-hour.
The only downside is that the transfer’s 1080i rather than 1080p.
However, this didn’t stop High-Def Digest from rating it 4/5: “This is a solid transfer offering a spot on quality that simply looks fantastic.”
Cautioned Blu-ray.com: “Don’t allow ‘1080i’ to prematurely set your expectations. Sherlock’s 1080i/AVC-encoded presentation is a welcome surprise; one that stands among BBC’s better releases.”
AV Forums dubbed the 1080i transfer of An Idiot Abroad, which includes deleted scenes and a half-hour preview, “for the most part … excellent”.
Top Gear: Great Adventures – Middle East, which includes the US and Albania road trips as well, enhances the Middle East odyssey with a commentary by James May and his crew.
Each adventure also comes with deleted scenes.
Also new this week are WWE Wrestlemania XXVII and The Twilight Zone: Season 3 (said DVD Town: “Like the first two seasons’ debut on Blu-ray, this one is awesome as well”).
