Hacksaw Ridge is the latest big-gun Blu-ray for which the 4K release is MIA.
It’s for sale on 4K-UHD in the UK and US, where critics have raved about its superiority.
“Hacksaw Ridge was captured at 3.4K resolution on Arri Alexa and Red Epic Dragon cameras, and completed as a 2K digital intermediate,” Home Theater Forum reports.
“This 2160p transfer, upscaled and graded using high dynamic range, exhibits a much higher level of detail, as expected, with more defined textures in clothing and backgrounds, but also allows for a greater sense of depth.”
But the 1080p version is no slouch, either: “This is a largely flawless looking transfer that offers consistently (and often pretty gruesomely) high levels of detail and fine detail,” says Blu-ray.com.
“The war drama invades Blu-ray with a gorgeous, near-reference 1080p/AVC MPEG-4 encode, but one very visible flaw unfortunately holds it at bay from completing its mission,” says High-Def Digest. “The otherwise stellar presentation is marred by several instances of banding.”
Also AWOL from the local release is the US edition’s Dolby Atmos encode. Ours has only DTS-HD MA 5.1 and Dolby True HD 5.1.
The week’s other newcomers are limited to Vigilante Diaries (“meticulously clean, save for spiking noise — to severity on a few occasions — in lower light conditions”), Mythica: The Necromancer and a re-issue of Serial Mom.

It’s sad to see The Incredible Hulk has not been released in New Zealand, I got the complete Blu-ray boxset from Amazon UK and love it, it looks incredible in HD even for a show made in the 1970’s.It’s so clear you even notice the odd white patch on the Hulk, OOPS 🙂
I will buy from Amazon UK to get 7.1 soundtrack and the price is cheaper than the New Zealand price.
Thanks for that, Trevor. I’m afraid it’s a case of economics. NZ just isn’t big enough a territory for distributors to double up (ie DVD + Blu-ray) marketing/packaging costs on some titles, especially box sets. It’s a frustration that doesn’t just make Hulk fans angry.
Thanks, Mark. Appreciate the homework. Lionsgate is one of the biggest offenders in this market for excluding key elements from their release, such as 7.1 audio and often extras.
Thanks Philip, Yes,it is really annoying but then again they would probably ask a lot more for it anyway, oh well, I can highly recommend it 🙂
DTS-HD and Dolby True-HD???
Actually, thx1138, it should be more like !!! It cites both encodes on the sleeve but the only audio option is DTS-HD. What’s more, the disc doesn’t have the 70-minute “exhaustive but fairly standard making-of documentary that explores every aspect of the production, featuring various cast & crew interviews, including Doss’s family members, and BTS footage”.
