New to Blu: May 12-18
There’s nothing elementary about the HD extras on this week’s biggest Blu-ray release, Sherlock Holmes.
As well as a segmented making-of half-hour, there’s a highly recommended “Maximum Movie Mode” in which director Guy Ritchie deconstructs his Victorian roller-coaster romp, using clips, storyboards and concept art on a giant monitor, as the movie unfolds.
The rest of the week’s Blu-ray premieres are less distinguished. Also due Wednesday are the film noir re-make, Beyond a Reasonable Doubt, starring Michael Douglas, Jesse Metcalfe (TV’s Desperate Housewives) and Amber Tamblyn (TV’s The Unusuals), and the sex comedy, Spread, which pairs Ashton Kutcher with Anne Heche.
A better bet will be Thursday’s post-apocalypse ‘toon 9 while due the same day is the animated Devil May Cry Collection based on the Japanese video games series.
Also blasting off on Blu-ray from Thursday are the Star Trek movies The Undiscovered Country, Generations, Nemesis and First Contact. Making their bow Monday will be Billy Idol in Super Overdrive Live and A Concert by the Lake.
