New to Blu: May 19 – 25

Oscar-winner Nomadland and Disney dazzler Raya and the Last Dragon light up this week’s Blu-ray slate.

Raya lands on both Blu-ray and 4K-UHD but the Nomadland disc is 1080p only.

Raya and the Last Dragon soars to a magnificent-looking 2160p UHD transfer with HDR in a 2.39:1 aspect ratio from Disney with a fantastic-looking video transfer that illuminates the finer animated textures and impressive colour palette,” High-Def Digest said.

Raya and the Last Dragon looks terrific in 1080p and the differences between that and the Ultra HD rendering aren’t vast but, are appreciable, resulting in a visually engaging and pleasing video presentation,” AVS Forum said.

“The 7.1 channel DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack makes for a rewarding home theater experience. This is a fairly active sound design that benefits from the additional rear channels.”

“Sourced from a 2K digital intermediate, Nomadlandarrives with a splendid 2.39:1 1080p transfer,” High-Def Digest said.

“Shot digitally, the image maintains a crisp well-detailed presence throughout much of the film.”

Nomadland features a DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 track that is often subtle in its immersive qualities, but which does provide good engagement of the surround channels throughout, though not necessarily in any ‘over the top’ way,” Blu-ray.com said.

It’s also a big week for classic or vintage titles on Blu-ray, ranging from the 1959 Peter Sellers satire The Mouse That Roared and Mommie Dearest to StoneThe Cook, The Thief, His Wife and Her LoverPsycho Goreman and Big NIght.
