New to Blu: May 26-June 1
There’s nothing complicated about this week’s Blu-ray slate – only three movies are being released in HD.
The biggest of these, It’s Complicated, a middle-aged romantic triangle comedy starring Meryl Streep, Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin, may not sound like a Blu-ray must-have.
But Hi-Def Digest says “solid video and audio make it all look and sound fairly spry” while Blu-ray.com thought the transfer “sharp and striking”.
The Oscar Wilde dramatisation, Dorian Gray, starring Colin Firth and Ben Barnes, earned mixed reviews but AVForums thought the Blu-ray transfer “a great one on the surface. Scratch a little deeper and, as with Dorian, himself, you’ll find some dirty little secrets lurking just below. But, on the whole, the image is seductive and the sound nicely organised without being flashy or overt”.
The week’s third release, the spy thriller, 50 Dead Men Walking, was judged to offer “a largely proficient visual experience” that’s “modest but reasonably competent”.
All three Blu-rays go on sale on Wednesday.
