New to Blu: May 29-June 4

The Blu-ray of the Boxing Day tsunami drama The Impossible goes on sale here riding the crest of a wave of acclaim.

Detail is stunning throughout; the beautiful – and terrifying – cinematography of the landscape and, in turn, the disaster, seamlessly blending in visual effects with rich photography (often involving water tanks and miniature effects work rather than CGI) and producing some thoroughly impressive shots as a result …

“The accompanying DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 track is similarly impressive, attaining reference standard with its demo mix of stunning atmospherics and rich ambience.”

“This is an exceptionally sharp looking high definition presentation that is strangely helped by the ferocity of the destruction it depicts.”

“A nicely detailed, spic-‘n’-span transfer brings this tale of disaster and survival to brilliant life.”

Hamilton: In the Interests of the Nation is a Swedish 007 adventure.

“The picture was very clear and sharp throughout. Shadow detail was very good throughout.

“The colour is very good although some scenes exhibited lots of light colour bleeding especially those set in Sweden.

“The picture includes a little shimmer and motion blur at times, which may indicate an upscale from an interlaced image.”

Premium Rush rides onto Blu-ray with a world-class, bitchin’ 1080p/AVC MPEG-4 encode.”

“Sourced from a 4K digital intermediate, the results offer an image that is bight, sharp, brimming with impressive detail, and free of the more egregious anomalies—like edge enhancement, artifacts and print defects—seen in some films.”

Also new are Kath and Kimderella, Doctor Who: Series 7, Part 2 and Tai Chi Zero.

Tai Chi Zero is one of the best-looking Blu-rays I’ve seen in a while.

“The 2.35:1/1080p transfer snags a perfect score, pumping out a flawless serving of HD picture quality.

“The stylised look is fantastic, awash in clarity and popping colours.”

“This is a largely flawless transfer that is easily able to handle everything from minute grains of sand in one of the opening battle sequences to large vistas of Chinese forests with only very, very minor stability problems cropping up occasionally.”

I will be waiting for the complete Series 7 release of Doctor Who before purchasing. I am not into buying half series.
