New to Blu: May 31 – June 6

In a dismal sign of distribution priorities for this market, Fist Fight is the week’s sole Blu-ray release while the far more prestigious Silence is DVD only.

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment is releasing Martin Scorsese’s latest on Blu-Ray across the Tasman but here locals are missing out on “terrific video and audio transfers” that High-Def Digest predicted “will please even the most discriminating videophile”.

There’s also no sign locally of The Mummy movies from the 1930s that Universal Pictures has just released on Blu-ray in Australia — or its Australian Blu-ray release of the 1949 classic, The Third Man, which michaeldvd.com acclaimed for its “wonderful, clean video presentation, lossless audio and excellent range of extras … a fantastic opportunity to possess one of cinema’s greatest gems”.

Another of next month’s releases, Roadshow Entertainment’s Jessica Chastain thriller Miss Sloane, also will be DVD-only here but Blu-ray in Oz.

Oh well, at least we get Fist Fight the same day of its US release.

“Prepare your retinas,” DoBlu.com warned. “Fist Fight comes with incredibly overdone brightness, bleaching out the initial outdoor images to an absurd degree.

“It continues from there, indoors, with less sunlight to bake the simple cinematography. It’s still too bright and overexposed though, washed out to an exaggerated degree.”
