New to Blu: October 17-23

The monster-size, 3D collector’s edition of Prometheus costs only $5 more than the 2D version.

“Here it is, folks – my new favourite demo disc. The four-disc 3D Blu-ray release of Prometheus never stops wowing

“Having watched both the 2D and 3D discs, I can attest to the 3D carrying a brighter image to compensate for the darkening glasses.”

Fans will find the extra cost of the $55 collector’s edition worth it for not only the 3D transfer but also an exclusive disc that includes a three-and-a-half-hour making-of documentary.

But if you’re primarily interested in seeing the movie in HD, the Triple Play version won’t disappoint

Gorgeous. And that’s about all you really need to know.”

“The DTS-HD Master Audio 7.1 sound mix is tremendously effective with those back surround channels used very intelligently in giving the entire soundscape a three dimensional flair with many examples of split effects enhancing the viewing/listening experience.”

Prometheus dwarfs the week’s other multiplex releases, Rock of Ages (“looks magnificent, with no evident digital artifacts like posterisation or colour banding”) and Life Happens (“the transfer is mostly pristine, but somehow entirely unremarkable”), while going direct to disc is A Fantastic Fear of Everything.

The first season of Modern Family is being re-issued for the first time on Blu-ray, to accompany the third season’s simultaneous bow on DVD and Blu-ray.

“What we’ve seen in previous Blu-ray collections of Modern Family are replicated here. Once again, I have to comment that Modern Family looks more like a dramatic series than a traditional sitcom and boasts a strong high definition appearance.”

Also new are seasons one of Two Broke Girls and three of The Vampire Diaries (“colour richness and saturation is one of the more striking aspects of the at-times grim, ink-slathered image”) and two cable-TV documentaries you won’t see in HD on Sky: Speed of Life and History of the World in Two Hours (3D).

Rounding out the week are WWE Summerslam 2012, WWE CM Punk – Best in the World, The Rock vs John Cena: Once in a Lifetime and Noel Gallagher’s International Magic Live at the O2.

  2. My copy is on its way from the US. Can’t wait to see it.

  3. Seen this, looks and sounds great, there are heaps of extras but at the end of the day a turd is still a turd.
