New to Blu: October 23-29

World War Z breaks out on to both 2D and 3D Blu-ray this week.

“Shot with a combination of HD and traditional 35mm cameras, World War Z debuts on Blu-ray with a generally satisfying 1080p/AVC MPEG-4 encode …

“My only gripe is that the video looks unrealistically smooth and sterile with a several instances of softness.”

World War Z explodes onto Blu-ray with a fantastic DTS-HD Master Audio 7.1 lossless soundtrack.

“It’s excellent from the moment the sound rises in sync with the Paramount stars shooting towards the mountain.”

“In 3D the look of the film is a bit of a disappointment.

“Besides a few key moments … the 3D doesn’t really add much and takes more away (brightness, sharpness) than it adds in expanding the experience.”

“The 3D aspects of the film feel very unnecessary, but they’re rendered well enough on this 2.40:1 MVC-encoded transfer (with a 2.40:1 AVC-encoded transfer on the 2D disc).”

The week’s other major releases are Treme: The Complete Third Season and Girls: The Complete Second Season  (“much like the first season set, the video here has an overall pleasing look with nice clarity and a fitting visual style”).

Curse of Chucky debuts to Blu-ray with an excellent 1080p/AVC MPEG-4 encode.

‘Shot with the use of HD cameras, the video unfortunately comes with that sterile, digital and very unfilm-like quality which lacks character and doesn’t feel very organic.”

Also going direct to disc is another horror, The Purge: “Details are strong, black levels are solid and you never have to squint to figure out what’s happening.”

“Universal’s DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 surround track delivers the genre goods, taking full advantage of each channel to create the sort of horror soundscape that lures you in — closer and closer — before lunging for the kill.”

The week’s other newcomers include Hotel Noir, Bounty Killer and Sympathy for the Devil: The Rolling Stones.

It appears that the local release of World War Z only comes with the theatrical version, whereas overseas releases come with both the theatrical version and the unrated version of this movie. Glad I imported this Blu-ray from the US.
