New to Blu: October 3 – 9
Solo: A Star Wars Story
➢ “The [4K] image quality is excellent, though it should be noted that the extensive use of on-set atmospherics (smoke, fog, clouds, etc) means you’re not always going to see a ton of abundant detail. When you do see it though, that detail and texturing are nicely refined and pleasing. The HDR grade deepens the blacks a bit and definitely intensifies the brightest areas of the frame; they’re sometimes eye-reactive and always more natural.” — The Digital Bits.
➢ “This UHD’s most readily apparent differential compared to the Blu-ray is a generally darker colour scheme … The increased darkness at least helps alleviate, but not entirely remedy, the pale blacks that run throughout the movie and that were the most problematic feature on the Blu-ray. But the UHD does see a rise in macroblocking.” — Blu-ray.com.
➢ “What’s immediately worthy of note is that this is one hell of a murky film by design. Those who have seen it at the cinema know what to expect, but those coming straight into it on home formats are going to be shocked and perhaps even think there’s something wrong with the presentation. There isn’t. This is the way it was meant to look, only arguably even better thanks to some great implementation of HDR.” — AVForums.
➢ “No qualms greeted the dynamic DTS-HD MA 7.1 soundtrack, as the mix made vivid use of all available speakers to create an involving, immersive experience. With lots of battles and space components, the information popped up in logical places, meshed together smoothly and created a wonderful sense of the situations. The soundscape was consistently an active presence and really brought us into the story.” — DVD Movie Guide.
