New to Blu: October 4 – 10

The top-selling disc in the US, Transformers: The Last Knight, sees the light of day here on 4K-UHD, Blu-ray 3D and Blu-ray.

“The film marks Paramount’s first Dolby Vision HDR release,” Home Theater Forum said.

The disc is also compatible with HDR10 and the results are definite eye candy. Colours are much more vibrant and natural, with more even gradations of colours, particularly in the varying degrees of yellow in Bumblebee and the reds and blues fading into raw metal on Optimus Prime. Contrast is also excellent, with deep blacks that provide high levels of shadow detail.

“Paramount’s Blu-ray is … an exceptional presentation of sight and sound that’s supported by an entire second disc’s worth of extra content,” said.

The 3D qualities impress. Spacing comes organically, whether larger vistas or more intimate venues … Colours are a little less purely punchy under the 3D glasses, but Bumblebee yellow and rolling English grasses, for example, retain a satisfying level of saturation. Details hold firm, with flesh tones, terrain, rubble, and complex robotic moving parts all capable and finely defined.

To coincide with T5’s release, Universal Pictures NZ also is re-issuing on 4K-UHD Terminator GenisysSerenity and Apollo 13 ahead of their US debuts.

It’s also releasing on 4K-UHD an earlier Blu-ray title, Get Out, which said offers “a pleasant uptick in colour and detail that results in a more fluid, organic upscale”.

New to Blu-ray is another horror It Comes at Night. “Appropriately dark and moody, the modest picture comes through without any major transfer-related quirks,” High-Def Digest said.

With that said, while shadow detail is solid, black levels have a comparatively grey appearance. And since the darkest portions of the picture are noticeably lighter than the letterbox bars above and below the frame, certain aspect ratio shifts during fades to black can appear rather jarring.

Also new:

  • American Horror Story: Roanoke – The Complete Season Six
  • Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Long Haul (“very good looking, almost better than this movie deserves to look”)
  • The House.

Amazon US have a 4K-UHD promotion this month. Three selected titles for $US50.

  2. Thanks, thx1138. Alas, the likes of Unforgiven and Sully can’t be bought unless you commit to a Prime membership. Amazon’s latest attempt to build its Prime customer base, which is only worthwhile if you live in the US, is a blow for NZ buyers of discs like these, Deepwater Horizon and Goodfellas — especially when distributor Roadshow Home Entertainment won’t release them in this market.
