New to Blu: September 11 – 17

Godzilla II: King of the Monsters

➢ “For this UHD release, the DI was upscaled to 4K and graded for high dynamic range. I’m only reviewing the HDR10 grade, but you’ll be pleased to know that both Dolby Vision and HDR10+ are available too. Overall image detail is actually quite good despite the 2K DI—keep in mind that the higher quality pixels captured in camera make a big difference. Texturing is nice, evident in stone, ice, cloth, and metallics.” — The Digital Bits.

➢ “The 2.39:1 HEVC 4K image delivers on every level. The use of practical and CGI effects throughout make this seem more realistic than other films of this nature … The entire film seems to have a darker tone to it. Flesh tones seem warm and natural, but the detail is where this film excels.” — Blu-ray Authority.

➢ “Without a doubt, Warner Bros.’ 1080p transfer of Godzilla: King of the Monsters is a solid presentation of complex source material. There’s so much green-screen and CGI that the film quickly establishes a heightened atmosphere and stays there, ushering in an odd mixture of razor-sharp reality and textured, not-always-convincing visual effects.” — Blu-ray.com.

Domino

➢ “Domino has a gorgeous colour palette favouring strong, bright colours in the warmer end of the spectrum. Black levels are deep and rich with excellent shadow detail and the encode is a good one. Contrast is layered and supportive of detail and has no signs of blown out highlights.” — Rewind.

➢ “Detail is about on par with a Euro-shot TV series, although these days even those have more polish than this, and the feature – which looks distinctly digitally shot and certainly doesn’t have any kind of filmic veneer – at least offers some nice detailing and fine nuances, particularly on close-ups.” — AVForums.
