New to Blu: September 9 – 15
What should have been the week’s best release on Blu-ray, Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell, has been delayed until November because of censor classification issues.
The same problem also has pushed back this month’s cult collectibles The Bird With the Crystal Plumage and Black Sunday to October while logistical snags have held up the release of Big Game and To Sir With Love until next week.
But going on sale here ahead of the US is the David Duchony drama series Aquarius, along with season 10 of Supernatural, Age of Adaline, John Carpenter’s Assault on Precinct 13, Sleepwalkers and direct-to-disc obscurities Grizzly Maze, Kill Me Three Times and Unfriended.
“With often gorgeous color and impeccable detail, Kill Me Three Times looks fantastic on Blu-ray.
“The faintly cartoonish visual style works well with the tone, and the transfer is technically proficient.”
“The DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 sound mix offers wonderful fidelity throughout with Johnny Klimek’s incessant jazzy score offering a terrific complement to the on-screen dramatics and spread through the entire soundstage.
“Dialogue has been excellently recorded and has been placed in the center channel while split sound effects make themselves known on a regular basis.”
“Universal’s Blu-ray release of Unfriended does feature the expectedly rock-solid video and audio, with the caveat that the technical quality is frequently lss-than-ideal, but deliberately so.”
“Since this is, essentially, a video feed of one of the character’s laptop screens, with streaming video and program windows, any anomalies are intentional …
“Detail in the program windows is exceptional, and, frankly, can’t imagine anyone watching this on anything other than Blu-ray (or possibly VUDU HDX or Netflix HD), as the text is almost illegible on the included DVD copy.”
Also new are Sword Art Online 2 (Part 1), Ping Pong, WWE: The Kliq Rules and WWE: The Very Best of Nitro Vol 3.
