New to Disney+ in January

Alaska Daily (January 4)

In Hilary Swank’s first TV series, the Oscar-winner plays a recently disgraced reporter who quits her prominent New York life to seek personal and professional redemption on a daily metro newspaper in Anchorage, Alaska. The ABC drama earned favourable if sceptical reviews, prompting this consensus from Rotten Tomatoes: Alaska Daily awkwardly straddles the sensibilities of network TV and edgier streaming fare, but the core message about the importance of local journalism is fit to print.”

If These Walls Could Sing (January 6)

In this “personal film of memory and discovery”, Paul McCartney’s daughter Mary guides us through nine decades of Abbey Road Studios history to see and experience the creative magic that makes it the most famous and longest-running studio in the world. Intimate interviews reveal how leading artists, producers, composers and the dedicated engineers and staff of Abbey Road found their musical language and community. But one critic thought it “a shallow, unsatisfying chronicle”.

Koala Man (January 9)

New ‘toon about a middle-aged dad Kevin and his titular not-so-secret identity, whose only superpower is a burning passion for following rules and snuffing out petty crime in the town of Dapto. He’ll do whatever it takes to defeat villainous masterminds, supernatural horrors, or worse: jerks who don’t take their rubbish bins down on the proper days.

Chasing Waves (January 11, all episodes)

In the wake of surfing’s Olympic debut in Tokyo, this 4K-shot series shines a spotlight on the people and places that are defining Japan’s reach in the global surf culture.

Extraordinary (January 25)

UK superhero comedy set in a world where everyone over the age of 18 develops a superpower … except for 25-year-old Jen, who feels like she’s being left behind. Adrift in a big, confusing world, and armed with nothing but a bit of hope and a lot of desperation, Jen begins her journey to find her maybe-superpower.
