New to Disney+ in January

The latest Hulu series to premiere here on Disney+ is a modern twist on Agatha Christie mysteries.

Death and Other Details (January 16) is set amid the glamour of the global elite and stars Mandy Patinkin and Violett Beane (TV’s God Friended Me and The Flash).

The Homeland star plays “the world’s greatest detective”, Rufus Cotesworth, who helps to prove the innocence of Imogene Scott, the prime suspect — and one who detests him — in a locked-room murder mystery aboard a lavishly restored Mediterranean ocean liner.

“We did extensive research into the grand vessels of the era — particularly the SS Normandie and the Queen Mary, where we filmed some of the first episode,” the creators told Entertainment Weekly.

“Our incredibly talented production designer James Philpott recreated those details on stage. The scale of our sets — built to match the scale of those massive ships — was almost embarrassing.

“Our dining hall is two stories tall and could have hosted a high end wedding if it wasn’t for all the camera equipment.”

The creators say the contemporary series is indebted to golden age detective novels.

“Where Knives Out might have been inspired by 70’s detective paperbacks, we were aiming at something a little bit more classical.”

Also new are the latest Marvel series, Marvel Studios’ Echo (January 10), in which Maya Lopez flees Wilson Fisk’s criminal empire, and A Real Bug’s Life (January 24), a National Geographic series inspired by the animated movie.

It puts under the microscope nine micro bug worlds, where the forces of nature play out on a miniature scale and where tiny creatures rely on amazing powers and extraordinary alliances to survive.  Reads the blurb:

The stakes are high … even if the critters are extraordinarily small. With new developments in filming technology and narrated by fun and witty guide Awkwafina, follow the incredible stories of the tiny heroes living in worlds beyond the imagination — from a jumping spider looking for a home on the streets of New York to a Costa Rican orchid bee’s first day on the job making perfume.

Expect “mind-blowing new behaviours and larger-than-life characters” in a family-friendly series the bills itself as “every bit as fantastical as any animated film”.
