New to Disney+ in May

The latest Star Wars spin-off, an original series abut the Sex Pistols, and a Chip ‘n Dale reboot lead the Disney+ highlights for May.

Obi-Wan Kenobi opens 10 years after the dramatic events of Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith where Obi-Wan Kenobi faced his greatest defeat — the downfall and corruption of his best friend and Jedi apprentice, Anakin Skywalker, who turned to the dark side as evil Sith Lord Darth Vader.

The first two episodes will land on May 22, and the rest will roll out weekly.

Pistol is an original series about the Sex Pistols based on Steve Jones’ memoir that will land with all episodes on May 31 while Chip ‘n Dale: Rescue Rangers resurrects the chipmunks as detectives (May 20).

The Valet (May 20) concerns a big movie star who tries to avert a PR disaster when she asks her valet to pose as her new boyfriend after she’s accidentally snapped in the company of her married lover. Samara Weaving, Max Greenfield and Eugenio Derbez star.

Sneakerella (May 13) is a musical spin on Cinderella, about an aspiring sneaker designer from Queens who hides his skills as a stock boy in a shoe store until a chance encounter with a Manhattan Princess Charming of sorts.

Promised Land (May 4) is an ABC network drama about two blended Latino families who run a Southern California vineyard.

Decider thought it “an enjoyable, soapy show that doesn’t insult the intelligence of its viewers” while Variety said it “combines smart family drama with (too) many soap twists. … a big and messy show with so many avenues to go down that it sometimes has trouble choosing which should matter most”.

Watch also for National Geographic documentaries on the “water wars” and famine in the wake of natural disasters, hybrid fantasy competition The Quest (May 11), and the May 20 premieres of November Story, a Tamil-language crime thriller web series, and OK Computer, an Indian absurdist philosophical sci-fi romp.
