New to Disney+ in September

At Witt’s End: The Hunt for a Killer (September 25) is a promising Hulu series about the re-opening of a cold case 30 years after the victim disappeared from a bowling alley.
Said Decider about the Ridley Scott-produced ABC News investigation: “There’s a cinematic feel to At Witt’s End: The Hunt for a Killer that, along with a good storytelling structure, makes the docuseries more compelling than similar true crime docuseries.”
It leads an unusual number of documentary and reality series that premiere next month on Disney+.
The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives (September 6) is a Hulu reality show with the tagline, “Swingers who happen to be Mormon wives”, while Muslim Matchmaker (September 12) follows Muslim Americans looking for modern love.
Demi Lovato, Drew Barrymore and Christina Ricci discuss the pros and cons of growing up in the spotlight in the documentary Child Star (September 17) while the stars of one of ’90s TV’s hottest shows analyse why it became so in After Baywatch: Moment in the Sun (September 18).
The Contestant (September 20) is an acclaimed documentary about a competitor in a cruel Japanese game show that one critic said “showcases the power of human resilience”
And Social Studies (September 28) features a diverse group of LA teens over the course of a year who open up their lives and phones to reveal how social media has reshaped childhood.
On the scripted entertainment front:
- How to Die Alone (September 13) is about a neurotic, loveless fat black woman whose brush with death makes her determined not to settle for anything less than the life she wants, no matter what
- Into the Wind (September 4) is a Polish romantic-comedy about a kite-surfing instructor and a medical student
- The season two premiere of Tell Me Lies (September 4) picks up as Lucy Albright (Grace Van Patten) and Stephen DeMarco (Jackson White) return to college after their dramatic breakup — where they find themselves in a new version of their addictive dynamic.
The pick of the newcomers for kids could be LEGO Pixar: BrickToons, a series of shorts featuring classic Pixar characters.
The five-part children’s show includes singing along with Miguel in the Land of the Dead, helping Merida and her brothers through a beary rocky situation, taking an epic field trip with Nemo, Marlin, and Dory, watching the Parr family try to save their neighbourhood from Syndrome, and joining Mater as he prepares Lightning McQueen for his next big race.
