Obsession, the low-budget horror movie that became a box office phenomenon, streams on HBO Max from October 22.
Directed by YouTuber Curry Barker, it follows a hopeless romantic who breaks the mysterious “One Wish Willow” to win his crush’s heart — only to get exactly what he wished for, with increasingly dark and sinister consequences (view the trailer).
Curry’s next movie, horror-comedy Anything But Ghosts, opens in May 2027.
Also in time for Halloween is The Pet Cemetery Murders: A Ghost Story (October 3), a three-part documentary that re-examines a mysterious 1985 cold case murder in Louisiana with “a haunting history of bloodshed and long-buried trauma”.
If you’ve seen Netflix’s Monster: The Lizzie Borden Story, you may want to check out the three-part ID docuseries on one of its characters, Unmasking A Monster: Aileen Wuornos (October 1), which uses digital replica technology to vividly recreate the serial killer and key figures from her life.
The Serial Killer Connection (October 8) is another ID docuseries about the unlikely bonds forged in the aftermath of a mass murderer’s crimes while HBO doco Kordell Stewart: Slash & Burn (October 28) explores “the personal toll of scrutiny beyond the football field” for the former Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback whose life was upended by a malicious rumour while searching for the truth behind it.
Season-three episodes of the Young Sheldon sequel, Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage (October 9), will drop weekly the same day as the US while stand-up special Kate Berlant: Parmesan (October 17) “skewers the many contradictions of modern life and the art of stand-up comedy itself” (view trailer).
