New to HBO Max in September

The newest must-see series from Sharon Horgan, the star and writer of Catastrophe and Bad Sisters, is Youth, which premieres September 21 on HBO.

She plays a 50-year-old divorcee navigating the highs and lows of dating, sex and love while balancing the demands of caring for her ailing parents with dementia, raising her not-quite-grown-up son, and dealing with an ex-husband about to move abroad with a young woman.

“She wants to have this valuable, creative, couldn’t-give-a-fuck kind of life, but she’s not there yet,” Horgan told Vanity Fair.

“I wanted to look at all that through the lens of a divorced woman who feels that she has a very specific amount of time left to find happiness. There’s a big alarm bell going off.”

Anne Reid, Harriet Walter, Sharlene Whyte, Rupert Friend, Aran Murphy and Robbie Gee co-star.

Here’s the trailer.

Another HBO Original, Siren: The Voices of Shelley Beattie (September 23), is a documentary about the parallels between Oscar-winner Marlee Matlin and athlete Shelley Beattie.

Both are deaf women who have experienced not only adventure and fame but also discrimination, abuse and addiction.

It’s billed as “a haunting portrait of strength, beauty and resiliency”.

A Killer Story (September 11) is a three-part HBO Original about a polarising murder case that spanned more than two decade.

In 2002, Dana Chandler was accused of killing her ex-husband and his girlfriend. Reads the blurb:

Lacking forensic evidence, the murder case is litigated over three arduous trials with the series unspooling a complex tale of family conflicts, betrayal, prosecutorial misconduct, competing narratives and confirmation bias.
More than a murder mystery, A Killer Story probes true crime obsession and the dangers of blinkered certainty in a case where the truth may never be known.

OJ Unseen: Exploitation of Evil (September 8) is a four-part ID series about the making of Juiced, a hidden-camera prank show featuring O.J. Simpson that was intended to rehabilitate his public image.

The producers were about to launch the extreme reality TV experiment when a mystery saboteur destroyed it from within. (View trailer,)

Common Side Effects (September 7) is a new Adult Swim ‘toon about former high school lab partners who begin to unravel a conspiracy involving big pharma and the federal government to suppress knowledge of a rare mushroom that may hold the key to curing all the world’s diseases. (View trailer.)
