New to HBO Max on Neon in October

IT: Welcome To Derry leads a month packed with premieres on HBO Max on Neon.
A prequel to the films that explores the origins of Stephen King’s Pennywise the Clown, it’s set in 1960s Derry and unveils “the dark history and circumstances surrounding the infamous creature”.
Bill Skarsgård, Taylour Paige, Jovan Adepo and Chris Chalk star; new episodes will drop 2pm Mondays from October 27.

“This is a book we love a lot, and we felt that there was still a lot of story to be covered,” director Andy Muschietti and his sister and producing partner Barbara Muschietti told Entertainment Weekly.
“It’s so rich with characters and events, we thought we would do justice to the book and the fans by going back into this world. Specifically, we are telling the stories of the interludes, writings by Mike Hanlon based on his investigation that includes interviews he conducts with the older people in the town.
In Welcome to Derry, we touch on the usual themes that were talked about in the movie — friendship, loss, the power of unified belief — but this story focuses also on the use of fear as a weapon, which is one of the things that is also relevant to our times.
The Chair Company (October 13) is an offbeat HBO Max comedy about an awkward everyman who investigates a conspiracy after an embarrassing incident at work.
“There are a lot of folks who really love Tim Robinson’s brand of comedy, where cringe and embarrassment are pushed way beyond the limits of human tolerance, as a man keeps cluelessly humiliating himself again and again, which is funny,” Bleeding Cool News says in its preview of a series “produced by some modern comedy heavyweights“.

Music fans can look forward to two documentaries: Billy Joel: And So It Goes (October 1), which rotten Tomatoes says “weaves a touching story fit for one of the Piano Man’s ballads” (view trailer here); and Martin Scorsese’s 3.5-hour Beatle bio, George Harrison: Living in the Material World (October 2), which won Emmys in 2012 for outstanding direction for non-fiction programming and outstanding nonfiction special.
Also of note are new seasons of Georgie and Mandy’s First Marriage S2 (October 17) and Polish whodunit The Thaw S3 (October 30) as well as:
- The Mortician (October 1), a docuseries about a real-life Six Feet Under: an ’80s Pasadena family funeral home that exploited bereaved families unethically.
- A Killer Among Friends (October 1), another true-crime docuseries, about a murder that haunts the victim’s inner circle.
- Like Water For Chocolate S1 (October 9), an HBO Mexico adaptation of the Laura Esquivel novel that was turned into an award-winning 1992 movie.
