New to Neon in August

Next month Neon will run a Documentary Spotlight season that includes the August 2 premiere of HBO’s acclaimed The Last Cruise, which documents the outbreak of COVID-19 on the Diamond Princess.

The Last Cruise is gripping in the way it conveys the quiet horrors of a deadly viral outbreak — and the global pandemic, too,” Decider said.

“More comprehensive COVID documentaries have been and will be made, but this one effectively maintains a tight focus on one key component of a huge story.”

The season also will include:

  • HIV: The Neglected Pandemic, in which Queer Eye’s Jonathan Van Ness examines the impact of HIV and AIDS over the past 40 years (August 8)
  • Between Musk and Mars, which investigates is SpaceX boss Elon Musk is trying to evict retirees from their homes (August 3)
  • Chyna, which explores the rise and fall of wrestler Joanie “Chyna” Laurer, whose name from erased from the sport’s history (August 6)
  • The Day Sports Stood Still, a movie-length look at 2020’s unprecedented sports shutdown (August 7)
  • The Legend of the Underground, which examines same-sex discrimination in Nigeria (August 5)

Neon’s also picked up dating shows S3 of Love Island USA (August 27) and soundalike The Cabins (August 23) — although The Guardian argues: “Though it has drawn comparisons with its better-known cousin, this wholesome series is more sweet than sexy, offering a markedly different kind of romance.”

S2 of Australian comedy Five Bedrooms will stream from August 12, S1 of The Equalizer from August 9 and S2 of FBI: Most Wanted from August 16.

And nature buffs can choose from Keas: New Zealand’s Witty Daredevils (August 13), Rescued Chimpanzees of the Congo (August 1), Doug to the Rescue (August 24) and David Attenborough’s Light on Earth (August 20).

New but not exclusive to Neon will be SoHo premieres Obama: In Pursuit of a More Perfect Union (August 4), Tig Notaro: Drawn (August 4), White Famous (August 5), S3 of Mr Inbetween (August 6), S2 of The L Word: Generation Q (August 8), Cinema Toast (August 21), Flatbush Misdemeanors (August 27) and S3 of Britannia (August 30).
