New to Neon in December

A Spanish comedy (with English subtitles) about a group of horror fans who turn their love for the genre into a business leads Neon’s highlights for next month.

Season one of Los Espookys will be available to stream from December 8.

The HBO production was well reviewed in there US, where The New Yorker said although it shares a certain archness with Wes Anderson films or the recent series Maniac, “it is free of the accompanying self-seriousness. It’s loose and healthily illogical, with plenty of big laughs“.

Echoed Vanity Fair: “Los Espookys is a horror show that bathes its characters in sunlight, a surreal comedy whose absurdism is outmatched only by the quietly earnest tenderness its writers clearly feel toward the characters they’ve created.”

Sky’s streaming service also will launch a raft of documentary series from December 3: the David Attenborough-narrated Deep Ocean, the Sigourney Weaver-narrated Dream the Future and Stephen Hawking’s Favourite Places (in the universe).

Hot off the satellite to stream weekly will be:

  • The L Word: Generation Q, a reunion sequel to the controversial lesbian drama of 15 years ago (from December 11)
  • Work in Progress, about a 45-year-old self-identified fat, queer dyke who undergoes a vibrantly transformative relationship (from December 12)
  • Marvel’s Runaways, season three (from December 16).

Neon also will pick up Prime’s Five Bedrooms while movie newcomers will include a Christmas-themed slate and a Sharknado feast. Here’s the full list:
