New to Neon in December

BBC First’s Agatha Christie’s Murder is Easy streams on Neon from December 18.

David Jonsson, Penelope Wilton and Mark Bonnar star in a 2023 adaptation that relocates the 1939 mystery to ’50s Britain and abounds in so many starkly modern attitudes that even The Guardian acknowledged it struggled under the weight of its woke liberties with the original.

Nonetheless it concluded it “shines a whole new light” on the Christie classic: “This inventive take on a vintage crime tale replaces an English police officer with a Nigerian attaché. It tackles race, feminism and class, while still being quintessentially English.”

But the Independent dismissed it as “bland and incoherent” and the Evening Standard recommended giving this “silly, self-important take on Christie a miss … Murder may be easy, but watching this is hard.”

A better bet should be season two of Bookie (December 13) and the Kiwi stand-up special, Rose Matafeo: On and On and On (Decmeber 21).
