New to Neon in July

The Westies is set in ’80s Hell’s Kitchen, where a crime syndicate profits from the construction business despite Mafia dominance of their turf.
The eight-part MGM+ drama will stream weekly from July 14. Reads the blurb:
The Westies’ legendary brutality and cunning have given them the leverage necessary to share the spoils through a fragile détente. But internal conflict between the brash younger generation and the old-school leadership threatens to set a match to this powder keg, which will sweep the Westies into the FBI’s ever-deepening investigation into the Italian mafia.
From Narcos co-creator Chris Brancato, it stars J.K. Simmons, Titus Welliver (Bosch), Tom Brittney (Grantchester) and Jessica Frances Dukes (Ozark).

Make That Movie (weekly from July 2) is billed as a “British absurdist comedy mockumentary” in which Australian comedian Sam Campbell (Taskmaster) plays a fictionalised version of himself — but as a film director who scours the country for everyday people who have an idea for a movie that can be shot in three days.
“There will not be a funnier show made this year,” The Guardian predicted of the Channel 4 series that streams on HBO Max in Australia.
“Hopefully it can run and run.”
The Age dubbed it “the most absurdist comedy of the year” and ScreenHub “very silly, very funny … Each episode is a tight 22-odd minutes and it’s impressive just how much comedy is packed into each instalment.”

Crookhaven (July 1) is a kidult BBC series set in a secret school for crooks where promising young thieves hone their deceptive skills to use them for good.
The BBC reckons “the series flips the high school genre on its head with a gripping, morally complex, twisty mystery rooted in identity, loyalty and found family”.
Dougray Scott (Vigil) and Julie Hesmondlalgh (Coronation Street) star.
