New to Neon in June

The HBO drama that divided audiences at the Cannes Film Festival will premiere next month on Neon, together with the world’s most famous TV soap opera and new seasons of And Just Like That … and Outlander.

The Idol (& SkyGo from June 5, SoHo from June 7) is HBO’s most controversial series since Euphoria and comes from the same creator, Sam Levinson.

It stars Lily-Rose Depp as a pop star who teams with a sordid nightclub impresario to resurrect her career after a nervous breakdown.

“Every bit as florid and sleazy as the industry it seeks to satirise, The Idol places itself on a pedestal with unbridled style but wilts under the spotlight,” was the Rotten Tomatoes consensus.

Neon also is dramatically broadening its scope with the newest seasons of perennial soap opera Days of Our Lives (June 19) and a handful of notable documentaries about the arts.

Neon will start Lives from the 2022 season, with each week’s episodes available to view for one month only.

The new documentaries include:

  • Framed, the true-crime story of Picasso’s The Weeping Woman (June 5);
  • The Ghost of Richard Harris, in which the actor children lend their perspective (June 6);
  • The Man and the Beauty, the life of visionary photographer Gian Paolo Barbieri (June 7);
  • The Pope’s Photographer, in which Arturo Mari shares public and private images of the Popes he served for 51 years (June 8);
  • Britain’s Novel Landscapes, which explores the life and times, and landscapes, of classic British women writers (June 8).

Returning for new seasons will be:

Awkwafina is Nora From Queens S3 (& Comedy Central from June 6): Grandma is anxious about getting older, Edmund has a taste of stardom as an actor, Wally contemplates some big life changes, and Nora takes part in a reality show;

American Auto S2 (June 11): Katherine’s crew recruits a crisis manager to deal with negative publicity and try to woo a sponsor;

Outlander S7A (& SkyGo from June 17): opens with Jamie, Claire and their family caught in the violent birth pains of the American Revolution as armies march and British institutions crumble in the face of armed rebellion;

The Righteous Gemstones S3 (June 17, SoHo from June 20): the wealthy and dysfunctional televangelist family returns, having taken over Zions Landing and dispatched Lyle and Lindy after finding out they were behind the Cycle Ninjas and the attempt on Jesse’s life;

And Just Like That … S2 (& SkyGo): includes talk of ‘MILFs’, Miranda taking her relationship with Che to the next level, and Carrie reuniting with a man she thought she’d left in her past.

Neon’s also picking up all three seasons of Arctic Circle thriller Fortitude (June 1), 2017 Australian miniseries Seven Types of Ambiguity (June 15), and the short-lived Law & Order: Los Angeles, which ran from 2010-2011 (June 13).
