New to Neon in March

Dark City: The Cleaner (March 4) is a Sky Originals NZ about a police station cleaner who moonlights as a serial killer dubbed “The Christchurch Carver”.

But when his alternate identity is blamed for killing he didn’t commit, he sets out to find the murderous copycat — only to realise he’s being hunted by an adversary who’s even more diabolical and dangerous.

It sounds vaguely like a Dexter copycat but is based on Paul Cleeve’s international best-seller.

Cohen Holloway, Chelsie Preston Crayford and Robbie Magasiva star in what Sky promises will be “a darkly funny thriller”.

The Regime (March 4) stars Kate Winslet as The Chancellor, the dictator of a fictional Middle European regime that begins to unwind over the course of a year.

It may sound like heady drama but is closer to a dark comedy or satire, despite Sky’s claim: “With political complexities and Kate Winslet’s compelling performance, The Regime offers a gripping exploration of power dynamics and the unravelling of a nation.”

The HBO series co-stars Matthias Schoenaerts, Martha Plimpton, Andrea Riseborough and Hugh Grant.

The Girls on the Bus (March 17) is named after four female journalists on the campaign trails of flawed presidential candidates, finding friendship, love and a scandal that could take down not just the presidency but democracy.

The Max series is based on Amy Chozick’s best-selling book, Chasing Hillary, and stars Melissa Benoist, Carla Gugino, Natasha Behnam and Christina Elmore.

Painting With John (March 19) is described as “part meditative tutorial, part fireside chat“, in which musician John Lurie shares his philosophical thoughts while painting watercolours.

The similarly-themed Chillin Island (March 12) is a two-year-old reality series in which rap personalities Alec “Despot” Reinstein, Ashok “Dap” Kondabolu and Aleksey “Lakutis” Weintraub invite their friends to commune with nature.

Other newcomers include blasts-from-the-past Enlightened S1-2 and Five Days (March 1), Quantum Leap S2b (March 5), People of Earth S1-2 (March 13), which first aired/streamed on TVNZ while for the kids are Deer Squad S2b (March 2) and Are You Afraid of the Dark? S1-2 (March 29).
