New to Neon in November

Allan Hawco as Detective Fitz and Josephine Jobert as Detective Arch in Saint-Pierre.

Whodunit fans can test their wits against a new Canadian mystery series next month on Neon as well as fresh seasons of Grace and Professor T.

Saint-Pierre streams from November 26, S3 of Grace from November 2 and S4 of Professor T from November 9.

Set on a French-controlled island just off the coast of Newfoundland, Saint-Pierre boasts a “Europe-in-North America spirit” home broadcaster CBC reckons:

It features [creator Allan] Hawco, who is both star and creator of the series, as a fish-out-of-water Newfoundlander detective exiled to the island after running afoul of a local politician … Hawco says that his influences for the show were also more European than North American. Fish-out-of-water detectives and small, picturesque locations with a seemingly impossible number of murders are both mainstays of British detective shows, which heavily inform the look and feel of Saint-Pierre.

But The Globe and Mail said it “squanders an original setting on a generic cop show … [it’s] a goofy procedural put in front of a unique backdrop it rarely glances over its shoulder at”.

However, Brio.tv thought the heroes “fun to watch” while “the dialogue in the pilot promises sass and bilingual snark ahead. Vive la France.”
