If SoHo’s second police drama set in small-town Pennsylvania is half as good as its first, Mare of Easttown, subscribers won’t want to miss it.

American Rust (8.30 Sundays from September 19) spearheads a vintage September slate and stars Jeff Daniels as a police chief investigating the discovery of a corpse in an abandoned steel mill.

When the woman he loves sees her son accused of the murder, he must decide what he’s willing to do to protect him.

It premieres a week earlier on Showtime in the US and co-stars Maura Tierney, Bill Camp, David Alvarez, Alex Neustaedter and Rob Yan.

Scenes From a Marriage will screen 9.30 Tuesdays from September 14.

An HBO re-make of the 1973 Ingmar Bergman series, it’s billed as “a poignant depiction of love, hatred, desire, monogamy, marriage, and divorce through the lens of a contemporary American couple”.

It reunites A Most Violent Year’s Jessica Chastain and Omar Isaac, and was co-created, written and directed by The Affair’s Hagai Levi.

Impeachment: American Crime Story (9.30 Wednesdays from September 8) dramatises President Bill Clinton’s controversial affair with White House intern Monica Lewinsky.

Based on Jeffrey Toobin’s book A Vast Conspiracy: The Real Story of the Sex Scandal That Nearly Brought Down a President, the FX series depicts the scandal from Lewinsky’s perspective but will not include depictions of sexual acts that occurred between Lewinsky (Beanie Feldstein) and Clinton (Clive Owen).

The rest of the cast includes Sarah Paulson, Mira Sorvino, Patrick Fischler and Annaleigh Ashford.

Returning for new seasons will be:

  • American Horror Story: Double Feature (9.30 Sundays from September 5), in which a struggling writer, his pregnant wife and their daughter move to an isolated beach town for the winter
  • Billions (S5B, 9.30 Mondays from September 6)
  • What We Do In The Shadows (S3, 8.30 Thursdays from September 9).

There also will be box set re-runs of Fear the Walking Dead (S6), Black Monday (S3), Mr Inbetween (S3), Snowfall (S2), Dave (S2) and Obama: In Pursuit of a More Perfect Union.
