New to ThreeNow in December

Fake (December 8) is an Australian Paramount+ series about a food writer (Asher Keddie) who starts to doubt the authenticity of the new love of her life, a wealthy grazier (David Wenham).

The Guardian called it “slow-building but eventually thrilling … I was hooked by the end of episode four and completely swept away by the rest of the eight episodes.”

But The Australian hailed it as “one of the best Australian dramas of the decade so far … an unflinching examination of deception’s cruel grip — whether it’s wielded by an imposter or delivered through our own flawed self-esteem.”

Sight Unseen (December 3) is a Canadian detective drama about an ex-homicide cop who’s diagnosed as being clinically blind and uses an “assistance app” to connect with a professional seeing-eye guide — with a dark past — 5000 km away to help solve crimes.

The Wall Street Journal thought it “a conceptually adventurous way of getting into all manner of thorny moral issues and strategic dilemmas, as well as putting its hero in precarious situations”.

Borderline (December 15) is another odd-couple procedural. Reads the blurb:

Straitlaced detective inspector Philip Boyd of North Ireland finds himself working alongside his foul-mouthed Republic of Ireland counterpart, detective inspector Aoife Regan, and although neither are happy about the partnership, the two must put their personal and professional differences aside to solve the brutal cases of victims along the border.

“Nothing new, but entertaining,” was one blog critic’s assessment. “If you are looking for some comforting crime drama with great lead actors, Borderline is for you.”
In Limbo (December 15) is an Australian comedy about a man grieving for the best friend who starts to haunt him. Decider thought it “extremely bittersweet …with a message about loss and loving what you have”.

ThreeNow’s also dusting off previous TVNZ series Deep Water, an ITV spin on Big Little Lies (December 13), and S1-2 of The Pact (December 26), an anthology drama that centres on a secret pact that may be all that saves a group of complex characters when their lives spiral out of control.

Also from the vault are Sky UK’s 2016 mystery The Five (December 6), which one critic likened to “a blood-splattered Chitty Chitty Bang Bang”, and 2017 Discovery drama Manhunt: Unabomber (December 29) that includes Keisha Castle-Hughes in the cast.

9-1-1 Lone Star belatedly returns for its fourth season (stream every episode from December 11) while Married to the Game (December 1) is a real-life Footballers’ Wives about the lives of the wives and girlfriends of leading English Premier League footballers.

Mean Girl Murders S1-2 (December 12) examines the dark side of female connections and rivalry, You, Me & My Ex S2 (December 20) explores staying friends with an ex, and Christmas Cookie Challenge S3-5, featuring “five of America’s best cookie makers”, rolls out on December 2, 12 and 20.
