New to ThreeNow in May

Long Bright River (every episode, May 25) was Peacock’s answer to HBO’s peerless Mare of Easttown.

It stars Amanda Seyfried as a Philadelphia cop whose beat is a neighbourhood hard-hit by the opioid crisis — and a series of murders that could be linked to her own past.

Reviews were mixed, ranging from raves to rejections.

Variety said it offers “a much more distinctive tale than the typical murder mystery … a layered narrative about two sisters, an inescapable family history and a community doomed by poverty, addiction and negligence.”

Yet The Hollywood Reporter thought it “well-meaning, but bloated. You could cut the first six episodes down to four with ease and down to two with the sort of ruthless efficiency that a story like this truly deserves in this format.”

But everyone agreed Seyfried was outstanding, with the Chicago Sun-Time hailing her as “nothing short of phenomenal”.

Scrublands: Silver (every episode, May 11) is season two of the crime drama that went to air this week on Three (and streams on Stan from April 17).

It follows investigative journalist Martin Scarden back to his coastal home town in Western Australia, where his new partner becomes the chief suspect in the murder of his childhood friend.

Homebound 3.0 S2 (date to be advised) has Henry and Melissa embarking on an even more audacious sham: faking a pregnancy to obtain an early inheritance from their cashed-up, overseas relatives obsessed with furthering the family line.

Deadly Influence: The Social Media Murders (every episode, May 10) is billed as “a unique, zeitgeist-capturing true crime series” about the mysterious dual lives of online influencers.
