New to ThreeNow in October

Two superior procedurals launch their second seasons next month on ThreeNow: Welsh noir The One That Got Away and Aussie whodunit High Country.

Elyn Rhys (The Mallorca Files) and Richard Harrington (Hinterland) return as the memorably odd-couple cops (and ex-lovers) to investigate a string of killings involving stolen identities and a dating website — the same one that Ffion herself has been using herself as she tries to move on from Rick, despite the fact he is now separated and single.

A premiere date has yet to be advised but High Country rides again from October 1. Reads the blurb:

Set nine months after the events of the first season, the eight-episode second series follows Detective Andie Whitford as she’s drawn into a case far more dangerous and personal than she ever imagined. It will test her loyalties and challenge everything she thought she knew about herself, her community and the High Country she calls home.

Leah Purcell (Wentworth), Ian McElhinney (Derry Girls), Sara Wiseman (A Place to Call Home) and Brendan Cowell (Avatar: The Way of Water) star.

Two local shows to watch for are S2 of award-winning musical Happiness and Lessons on Living With John Aiken (dates to be advised).

The former opens with director Charlie Summers (Harry McNaughton) having been well and truly cancelled on Broadway. Reads the blurb:

In despair, and eating far too many lamingtons, he’s vowing never to work in theatre again. That is until mum, Gaye (Rebecca Gibney), talks him into directing amateur theatre group Pizazz’s new show. He just can’t help himself.

Charlie’s vision for a Broadway-style version of Sherlock is a dark and moody cine-theatre production, far away from the kind of musical the people of Tauranga are used to. But bestie-turned-enemy Jacqui James is putting on her own musical, Maligned Women of History, and it’s got all the glitz and glamour that Sherlock lacks.

The shows and the feud escalate, until, at a spectacular TATA (Tauranga Amateur Theatre Awards) event, Charlie and Jacqui finally realise they must work together to save Pizazz itself.

The three-part Lessons is named after both the Married at First Sight Australia psychologist and Nigel Latta’s final book, which was written to help Kiwis through life’s ups and downs.

Aiken meets “inspiring New Zealanders on the metaphorical psychologist’s couch” to learn their own lessons on what to do when life gets messy.

World’s Biggest Mako is billed as “an adventure and an investigation into the return of giant pelagic sharks to New Zealand waters”. It will stream the same time it surfaces on Sky Open.

S2 of Celebrity Traitors UK (October 3) has stars as diverse as Richard E Grant and Coronation Street’s Julie Hesmondhalgh heading to The Traitors castle while expect S1 of Blue Bloods spin-off Boston Blue (TBA) to land on ThreeNow and Three within days of S2’s premiere on Neon.

  1. Good to see Happiness back for another season. I enjoyed the original season and it seems to have been picked up by a few overseas broadcasters with its musical comedy appeal. — Dave.
