Grand Designs New Zealand

TVNZ 1 will be the new home of Grand Designs New Zealand when the seventh season returns to screens in 2022.

New Zealand is renowned the world over for its dramatic landscapes – and it is just as famous for its ground-breaking domestic architecture. Grand Designs NZ charts the in-depth process of creating these unique homes, and the personal journeys of those building them. Kiwis have always been lauded as thinking outside the box – and so it is when they embark on building a home.

As well as a new home on TVNZ 1, Grand Designs New Zealand also has a new host, British-born architect Tom Webster.

Tom’s experience lies within a broad-spectrum including projects for Google, master planning at Windsor Castle and designing a race car for world rally champion Colin McRae. He recently collaborated on the highly acclaimed Hotel Britomart, New Zealand’s first five Green Star hotel in downtown Auckland.

Tom will invite audiences on the challenging and inspirational journeys of Kiwis risking all to pursue their vision of a dream home in the next season of Grand Designs New Zealand.

Our Big Blue Backyard

TVNZ welcomes a brand-new season of landmark series Our Big Blue Backyard, diving deep into the ocean to celebrate the stunning wildlife in te Mōana nui-ā-Kiwa – our oceans.

The tropical Cook Islands are the northernmost reach of our patch; the shallow sea of the Hauraki Gulf lies literally on the doorstep of our biggest city; then there is the Top of the South where Golden Bay’s sandbar hides a sinister underbelly, connected to the network of sea-drowned valley in Marlborough Sounds.

An ancient remnant of Gondwanaland known as the Three Kings Islands is protected by violent seas and steep cliffs, while the photogenic Otago Peninsula with its albatross, penguins and sea lions is dubbed the wildlife capital of New Zealand.  Further south, Snares Island is considered one of the world’s most pristine wildlife sanctuaries and is the most ambitious and “untouched by humans” location in our big blue backyard.

This Is Going To Hurt

Golden Globe, Emmy and BAFTA winner Ben Whishaw stars in Adam Kay’s adaptation of his bestselling memoir about life as a junior doctor.

This hilarious – and often heartbreaking – series follows a fictionalised version of Adam as he juggles being a good doctor and a good person, in a system that sometimes feels like it’s against him.

Set in obstetrics and gynaecology, or ‘brats and twats’ as it’s known, This Is Going To Hurt reveals the unvarnished realities of Adam’s life on and off the ward: 97-hour weeks, life and death decisions, a tsunami of bodily fluids.

And a personal life forced into second place. All for an hourly rate that struggles to compete with the hospital parking meter. A stark reminder of the vital role played by medics like Adam everywhere.

Trigger Point

Set in contemporary London, Trigger Point, is a high-octane six-part thriller series focusing on the Bomb Disposal Squad. Known as “Expo”, officers risk their lives daily on ‘the long walk’ towards danger. Death is always just a heartbeat away.

The series follows front line officer Lana Washington (Vicky McClure) who is an experienced bomb disposal operative. Reckless and out of control, Lana is ex-military and pushed to breaking point dealing with a series of improvised explosive devices which threaten the capital during a terrorist summer campaign.

Under extreme pressure and searching for answers, Lana can’t help but become suspicious that the bomber’s targets on her team are premeditated. It’s a terrifying thought, but against all odds how does she prove it and discover the bomber’s real identity?

Whina

Whina is the love story behind the woman who changed a nation; the story of Dame Whina Cooper.

In 1975, 80-year-old Whina, frail but still sharp as a knife, is roused to action – it’s her calling to unite Māoridom and fight not only for their land, but for their very existence. At the front of Te Roopu Ote Matakite, she leads a sacred 640km march from the top of New Zealand to Parliament in Wellington.

But before her fateful quest, we track back to a younger Whina to explore the events and characteristics that shaped her: her gifts, spiritualism and imperfections. In these early years, she meets William Cooper, a charming Māori-Pākehā Land Officer. William is enamoured by Whina, her courage and aristocratic heritage. The attraction is mutual and Whina sees him as an agent who can help her people.

Whina jumps between the present and past: an older, arthritic Whina coping with the physical and psychological demands of the march, and a younger Whina, ostracised for carrying William’s baby out of wedlock, using her mana to rise as a protector of Māoridom.

Starring Rena Owen, Mirama McDowell, Vinnie Bennett, Matu Ngaropo and Erroll Shand.

Made with the support of NZ Film Commission and Te Māngai Pāho.
