New to TVNZ+: December 14-20

Tsunami 2004: The Day the Wave Hit (December 15) is a “a terrifying documentary” about the Indian Ocean tsunami that killed more than 230,000 people on Boxing Day 2004.

Over four episodes, survivors relate the devastating events by sharing their stories.

“Just a handful are remembered in detail here,” The Guardian said, “each one gutting, by people willing to relive, in empathic and harrowing detail, the worst day of their lives, still unbelievable 20 years on.”

Inside Prison: Britain Behind Bars (December 15) is a 2019 ITV docuseries about life inside six British prisons.

“I don’t know how the producers enlisted their subjects, but they struck oil,” The Times said.

“Some inmates were almost too funny and camera-ready to be true … Did anyone else have a vague feeling … that they were watching an episode of Porridge?”

Forensics: The Real CSI (December 15) follows forensic specialists in the UK trying to solve the mystery of what has happened at the 9000 crime scenes they attend each year.

“The work is painstaking and impressive, but forensic crime-scene science is nothing like as exciting as TV drama would have you believe,” The Telegraph said.

Live sport includes the third cricket test between Black Caps and England, the first one-day international between the White Ferns and Australia, and two BNZ Breakers games.

Also new are Love Island Spain (December 18) and fresh from their linear debuts Taskmasterclass, Shortland Street: Reflecting a Nation and Naughty Shorty, DNZ: ADHD: Not Just Hyper and Caught On Dashcam Holiday Specials.

  1. Grrr. Went to watch my next episode of Farscape on TVNZ+ and it was gone. Found it has moved to Plex, which I discovered is an ad-feast site compared to the few that were on TVNZ. May have to look at buying the remaining seasons from Amazon Prime so I can watch them ad free. — Paul W.

  2. I experienced something similar with Prime Video, Paul, when it migrated a lot of its movies from being included with your PV subscription to being an added subscription via the MGM+ channel!

  3. Thanx Philip. By the way who does MGM + in this country? There’s a new programme called Earth Abides on MGM in the US. — Paul W.

  4. It’s available through Prime Video as an add-on subscription. First seven days are free. Not sure if it’s the full US service or a lite version.
