New to TVNZ+: December 2-8

We Need To Talk About Cosby (December 2) is a 2022 Showtime docuseries about the “rapist who had a really big TV show once”.

“This heartfelt documentary, made by a Black standup and former superfan, lets women tell their horrific stories – and finds the alleged predator was always hiding in plain sight, even during his meteoric rise,” The Guardian said.

Summed up Rotten Tomatoes, where the four-part series earned a 99% critics’ rating, “W. Kamau Bell deftly unpacks the Cosby scandal by allowing the conversation to be uncomfortable, yielding a robust examination of the disgraced entertainer and the culture that enabled him.”

Costume drama fans can binge on all three seasons of the Jane Austen dramatisation, Sanditon (December 6).

Based on her final unfinished novel, it drops the same day as two other Austen series: 1995’s Pride and Prejudice and 2009’s Emma.

It was adapted by P&P’s Andrew Davies but didn’t scale the same critical heights — with the greatest acclaim being saved for the final third season, which has just completed its BBC UKTV run on Sky.

Quipped The Times: “After a tame series one and two, Sanditon may finally have found its soul. And a flavour that at least faintly tastes of Jane Austen.

“On the whole, though, the series does nothing to scare the horses, and is as comforting as a mug of cocoa.”

Also new are box sets of the original Frasier in HD (December 7),  The Big C (December 2) and Shooter (December 8)

The Big C, which stars Laura Linney as a stifled teacher who liberates her life when she learns she has stage 4 melanoma, has aired extensively on free-to-air and Sky TV.

The lesser-known Shooter stars Ryan Phillippe as an ex-Marine sniper who’s framed for murder after foiling an assassination plot.

Its 2016-2018 run on the USA network earned mixed reviews. Entertainment Weekly thought it “full of sharp cat-and-mouse intrigue” but felt felt it “just a little undercooked and rudimentary”.
