New to TVNZ+: March 23-29

The Couple Next Door (March 28) is the latest neighbours-from-hell thriller, about a young couple (Eleanor Tomlinson, Alfred Enoch) who move into a flash suburb and intensely befriend an alpha traffic cop (Sam Heughan) and his glamourous fitness influencer-wife (Jessica De Gouw).

“But as the two couples grow ever closer, their bodies and their emotions quickly become tangled up in a complex web of desire and betrayal that will leave no one unscathed,” promises the blurb.

Critics thought otherwise. “It wants to be a steamy suburban thriller — Blue Velvet with a Yorkshire accent,” quipped The Times. “But it’s about as hot as the unlamented ‘adult’ soap spinoff Hollyoaks Later.”

“This six-part drama tries too hard to be emotional and moving, which is a nuisance when our expectations were undemanding to begin with,” the Daily Mail said. “All we ask from this type of formulaic domestic thriller is some heavy petting, a lurid subplot or two, and a murderous denouement.”

But The Telegraph thought it “enjoyable nonsense … Every five minutes there’s a complete failure of logic, either in terms of plot or production … I found the whole thing ridiculous. So ridiculous that I happily binged the lot in two days.”

New from March 25 are local documentaries Unravelling Anxiety, which explores what it’s like to live with an anxiety disorder, and Misconceptions: First Trimester Miscarriages, which “aims to bust myths, provide information, and let grieving parents know that they are not alone”.

Debuting March 24, the same day as its TVNZ 1 premiere, is the three-part Gloriavale expose Escaping Utopia while streaming from March 27 are season two of Alone Australia, which lands a day ahead of its TVNZ 2 launch, and the crime movies:

  • American Hustle
  • The Nice Guys
  • Sicario
  • Sicario: Day of the Soldado.
