New to TVNZ+: March 28-April 3

Betrayal stars Endeavour’s Shaun Evans as an MI5 agent at odds with his superiors as he tries to thwart a security threat, possibly from within, while trying to save his marriage and job.

UK critics were sharply divided over the ITV series. The Telegraph thought it a “tightly scripted modern-day thriller … The plot is workaday, but the performances lift this out of the ordinary.”

And while The Arts Desk questioned the “devious twists and deceptions … what it does successfully is to depict the way intelligence work is often mundane, dirty and squalid, a seedy back-street affair rather than a globe-trotting thrill ride”.

On the other hand …

“Betrayal’s selling point is that it commits as fully to the portrait of a relationship in distress as it does to the spy adventures, but it’s not an easy marriage,” said The Guardian, which dismissed it as “so drab and downbeat it’s like a different genre”.

Radio Times said it’s “full of tired tropes … The storyline says absolutely nothing that hasn’t already been said about the blend of marriage and spycraft, or even the potential for relationships to dissolve over time in any scenario.”

Betrayal streams from March 29, the same day TVNZ+ dusts off the excellent true-life dramatisation Quiz.

Also new, from April 1, are season two of Northwoods Survival, every episode of Rescue Me and the movies:

  • My Girl
  • Crossroads
  • A Knight’s Tale
  • The Jane Austen Book Club.

Streaming the time as their linear debuts, as previewed here, are A Taste for Murder, Johnny Vegas’ Little Shop of Antiques and Is Your Smart Phone Spying on You?

Live sport includes Football: International Friendlies and T20 Cricket.
